UAE TDRA Plans to Shut Down 2G Network in 2022

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) in UAE has announced that the 2G network (GSM) will be shutting down in UAE in December 2022. Devices that support only 2G technology will not be able to be sold in UAE markets starting June 2022.

Malaysia SIRIM Requests Self-Declaration from Certificate Holders

The Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) has requested that existing certificate holders complete a revised version of the Certification Agreement for Compliance Approval (Type Approval)(Issuance 2) for Communication, Multimedia and Hybrid Equipment. Certificate holders have until August 31, 2021 to complete the declaration.

Subsecretaría de Telecomunicaciones (SUBTEL) in Chile has published Resolución 1321 Exenta on July 27, 2021, updating Resolución 1985 Exenta, the Fixed Technical Standard for Short Range Devices. These updates seek to better harmonize the regulation to international standards.

Hong Kong OFCA Advises 2G Mobile Users to Upgrade to Higher Generation

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) in Hong Kong issued a General Advice on July 21, 2021 titled “Users of the Second Generation Mobile (2G) Services Advised to Consider Upgrade to Higher Generation of Mobile Services.” The spectrum assigned to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) for 2G services is set to expire at the end of September 2021 and part of this spectrum will be reassigned.

Singapore IMDA Opens Public Consultation on 2.1 GHz Band for 5G Use

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in Singapore has opened a public consultation on their proposal to allocate the 2.1 GHz frequency band for 5G networks based on Standalone network specifications. Radio Spectrum Management (RSM) in New Zealand has opened a public consultation on the future use of the 3.3-3.41 GHz frequency band. RSM believes the use of this band is low and proposes new uses for this underutilized band. The consultation is open and will receive comments until August 31, 2021.
